His Excellency Mpho Churchill O. Mophuting, Ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to the United States, joined the Diplomatic Corps in September 2023 as Resident Ambassador in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ambassador joined the Foreign Affairs Ministry from the Ministry of Defence and Security where he held the position of Deputy Commander, Botswana Defence Force (BDF) at the rank of Major General. Ambassador Mophuting served the Botswana Defence Force continuously for over 35 years and held command, staff, and instructor appointments.
Ambassador Mophuting has as well served the BDF in various capacities and assignments inside and outside Botswana. Amongst the various assignments he has held are Permanent Executive Secretary of the East and Southern Africa Liaison Office of CISM for 3 years, Adjunct Lecturer at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS), just to mention but a few. Ambassador Mophuting was nominated by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi to set up and head the COVID-19 National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) in March 2020 in response to the scourge of COVID-19. He served as the NEOC Coordinator for one year and left when he was appointed Deputy Commander, BDF in February 2021.
He is a graduate of the US National Defence University, Washington, D.C. Ambassador Mpho Mophuting holds the distinguished awards of; Duty Code Order (DCO), Pearl Jubilee Medal (PJM), Distinguished Service Medal (DSM), CISM Officer Medal (COM) and the Order of the Knight of CISM (CKM). He is also the first World Recipient of the General Carlton W. Fulford Award from the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies in August 2006. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, a Master of Science and a Master of Business Administration
