In 2016, the US Embassy nominated twenty-six fellows from Botswana to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellows program.

The Mandela Washington Fellows, referred to as Young African Leaders program, was launched in 2010 to support young African leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democracy, and enhance peace and security across Africa. Botswana has participated in the program since 2014. This year Batswana Fellows were scattered across the U.S. to participate in the program through different universities like the University of Minnesota, Drake University in Iowa, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Wisconsin.

During the Fellows’ three-day Summit hosted by President Obama in Washington DC, the Embassy had an opportunity to host them. These young fellows are very inspiring, creative and have a vision for Botswana.
